Sunday Night Harvest

We (I) have had many failures and disappointments in the garden this season. I suppose that is the inescapable fate of a laissez faire gardener. Still, when you start seeds in January that get chomped down to the root in June... well, that hurts.
But we've also had our successes! On Sunday night, Jay Kira, and I picked cucumbers, zucchini, cherry tomatoes...
and a bowl full of figs!Look at my baby eating figs straight from the tree!

And look what we (I) did to that bowl of figs today...

That's right! Fig preserves. I followed a new recipe for whole fig preserves that I found on Bayou Woman's website. Hope they're good!

Montgomery, Again

My sister-in-law Anna took some beautiful pictures when we were in Montgomery. I haven't even downloaded them all yet, but look at these gorgeous close-ups of Kira. Thank you, Anna!

Dickey Chicks Pool Party

Kira attended her second Dickey Chicks event last night (all the females on my mom's side of the family get together every few months). We had a pool party at my Aunt Anne's house. Kira knew something was up when she spotted her float in the den. She dragged it up to this chair and (with a little help) settled herself in to read a book! To add to the already hilarious spectacle, she pulled out her pacifier and stuck out her tongue as soon as she saw the camera. What a funny kid! Obviously, she was excited about going to the pool. We had a great time (despite a little nighttime fussiness on Kira's part). Thank you to our hostesses, Anne, Annie, and Barbara!

Happy Father's Day!

Kira is a daddy's girl through and through. Can you blame her? She has a pretty amazing daddy. We love you, Jay! Happy 2nd Father's Day!

Montgomery Fun

Jay, Kira, and I went to Montgomery yesterday to visit family. We loved seeing everyone, and Kira especially loved seeing her big cousin Addie. I don't think I've ever seen Kira laugh like that - toddler humor, I guess.

15 Months

Kira is 15-months-old today, and she had her check-up this morning. She weighs 25 lb, 4.5 oz and is 31.25 inches tall. That is between the 75th and 90th percentile for both. She is not walking yet, which has been a source of some frustration for her parents. The doctor, however, was not a bit concerned. In fact, when told that she took 3 steps on Tuesday, he said, "Oh, she's walking." Needless to say, I was glad to have his reassurance. All in all, Kira is a happy, healthy, big 15-month-old!

Daddy Day

Okay, so this is Jay. Yesterday, Millie left me and Kira alone for the day--she went to Rome with a couple of friends (Rome, GA--it's about an hour north of here) and apparently they sat by the pool and were catered to by one of the friends' mothers. Kira and I, having no one to cater to us, decided that we were going to go to the park. This took a bit longer than I thought; apparently taking care of a baby by yourself all day is not "easy." At any rate, Millie asked me to keep track of what we did (I can only assume so that she could keep track of me). And so... I did have the sense to change her out of that onesie, although we were completely ready to go before I realized it might be uncomfortable. The picture below represents the end of a pretty good struggle with her sunglasses and hat. She doesn't want to wear them; she just wants to hold them.
Millie and I think that Kira looks like a kid in the picture below, not really like a baby anymore. She was really happy when our run ended at the park.
Every shot after this included a rather dirty behind. Poor pink shorts. And, really? We have mulch at home.
She tried to go down this slide on her own. I stopped her, of course.
Millie was a little surprised that I let Eli up on the playground equipment with us. Frankly, I was surprised that she was surprised.
There were a lot of pictures like this, where Eli was in Kira's way. I liked this one best because, if you can properly ignore the implied third dimension of the photo, it looks like he is about to lick her head.
Pretty soon after this, Kira came down the slide to me. I decided not to try to get a picture of that. Wisely, I can only assume, based on some mishaps we had when she was younger. I kind of think Kira looks like my cousin Graham here, or at least what Graham would look like if he were a brown-haired, fourteen-month-old, blue-eyed girl. It's something about the way she is setting her mouth.
This picture is a little dark, but I absolutely loved it. Kira is hydrating, and Eli stayed up on the set by himself. They are both ignoring me. Immediately after this I ran down that little hill and hurdled over Kira. She thought it was hilarious. Obviously; I'm the daddy.

So apparently I don't post pictures when Jay is out of school. It has been almost 2 full weeks, and we have been to the lake and to the mountains. We have had all sorts of fun but have taken very few pictures. I forgot to take my camera to Gramma and Papa Al's house in the mountains this week, which is a shame because it was BEAUTIFUL and so much fun. But, to appease Kira's eager public, I will share some more lake pictures. Check out my boating baby...
(Edit: My mother wants it to be known that she was clearly not aboard the boat as she would NEVER have allowed Kira to roam about without her life jacket.)

Memorial Day at the Lake

We went to my parents' lake house to kick off summer vacation. We had a wonderful time and saw lots of family. Kira was lucky enough to celebrate her great-granddaddy's 87th birthday with him! It was also warm enough for Kira to swim one afternoon; she LOVED it. She just laughed and laughed...
