Reasons to Celebrate

1. PopPop turned 60 yesterday!
2. My cousin Neal celebrated 1 year sober this weekend! (Kira drew him a picture.)
3. This is not nearly as big of a deal as the other two, but Kira peed in the potty 2 days in a row!

Sneak Peek

We have been working on Kira's Big Girl Room. There is still a lot to be done (hang blinds, remove giant desk, etc.), but I thought I'd give you a preview. Kira isn't sleeping in her Big Girl Bed yet, but she loves to sit and read there.

Kira, Jay, and I all love her room so far. I hope that an inviting new room will make for an easy transition out of the crib! I'll post more pictures when the room is finally complete. In theory, there will be a new nursery to share, too. Hopefully, we will get it all finished before Baby Boy actually arrives! One step at a time.

Coveting a Coloring Book

Isn't this coloring book lovely? Kira is not quite artistically advanced enough for me to justify spending $8 on a gorgeous coloring book, but, oh, I'm tempted! I just love the thought of her coloring butterhead lettuce instead of a certain red, furry monster. A mom can dream...

Kira & Mimi

{Here we go!} {A bite for Kira, a bite for Mimi.} {Mimi in her finest attire.} {Yes, that's a diaper under Mimi's tutu.}

*All of Mimi's outfits were chosen by Kira whose sense of style seems to be emerging.

Home Sweet Home

We made it home yesterday afternoon after four full days at my parents' house (thanks, Mom and Dad!). Jay was a little nervous about driving his brand new car (Kia Sorento) with his pregnant wife and child inside through the ice and snow. Honestly, the roads were still pretty bad. We saw a line of cars trying to get up a hill on a major road with their wheels spinning fruitlessly. Yikes! But we made it home without incident. Our ridiculously nice neighbors had already hacked a path for us from the street to our front door because our driveway and yard is a solid block of ice. They also made a little place for us to park at the bottom of the driveway. We are very lucky to have such generous neighbors, and I'm not sure how I would have gotten my pregnant self up to the house without their handiwork.
Ice is hard for a toddler to play in, but we did play "throw ice chunks on the ice sheet" for a few minutes today. It was something like what I imagine curling to be.
Jay ended up with the entire week off school. He has deemed this weather event "Snowpocalypse 2011" and theorizes that this will be the only time he gets an entire week off for weather in his entire teaching career. Probably a reasonable theory. Now we just have to see when he has to make days up...

Snow Day 2

We are still snowed in at my parents' house. My dad walked the mile to work today while the rest of us stayed put.
In the need for a post-nap activity today, we had a cookie party. Kira helped bake them...
...and then we had a little tea party complete with hats and a lovely flower arrangement.
Let the fun continue. Jay's school is already canceled again for tomorrow, and the roads are still icy. It's looking like we might be stuck here for the rest of the week!

Laundry Hamper Sled

We took our intrepid explorer out in the snow today. We decided that the best way for her to get around was in a laundry hamper, and boy were we right! It was perfect! A solid layer of ice covered the 4 or so inches of snow. She could slide around on top of the ice without falling out of the hamper (for the most part). After our snow adventure, we came inside to enjoy hot brownies. Yum!It was a wonderfully lazy snow day. We're looking forward to another tomorrow - Jay's school is already canceled! Woohoo!

Snow Day

We decided to hunker down at my parents' house last night to wait for The Snow. We decided that if all of Atlanta is going to lose power, we would like to be at a house with fireplaces and a gas cooktop. So far, the power is still on - thank goodness! We woke up to several inches of snow and a delicious breakfast of bacon and french toast. Kira, however, only wanted snow for breakfast. YaYa got her one bowl and Kira asked for another... and another... and another... I finally had to stop her and promise "more snow later." Forget cookies! It looks like Kira might have a new favorite treat...

What We're Listening To...

Thanks to our new iPod and iPod dock, we now have all of our music at our fingertips. It's pretty amazing. We have made a special playlist for Kira with "child appropriate" music. Kira has three favorites so far. She asks for them by name and then sings along. I think she has pretty good taste...
Be OK by Ingrid Michaelson
Fidelity by Regina Spektor (deemed "My Mind" by Kira)
If I Had a Million Dollars by Barenaked Ladied (simply "Million Dollars")

More Christmas

We had a wonderful time in Augusta with our family! I came back with far too few pictures as usual. I will send you over to Aunt Anna's blog to see her wonderful photos of the Dickens gathering (Jay's mom's family) as well as an amazing video of Kira with her cousin Addie (yes, I'm a blog mooch).
I did manage to get a picture of Kira, Addie, and Gramma at the Dickens party. Please note Addie's awesome galoshes with her smocked dress.I also got a couple of shots of Kira and Addie playing at Grampa's house. Boy, do they have fun together!
So I hope you had a wonderful Christmas season and that 2011 will be happy and blessed. We here at the homestead are very much looking forward to the coming year as we prepare for the arrival of our little boy in the Spring!
