Memorial Day in the Mountains, Part One

The last couple of years the Atlanta Wamsteds have celebrated the end of the school year by heading to Highlands, North Carolina for a long weekend plus a day or so. Jay's mom has a house up there, and it is the perfect place to regroup and ready ourselves for a hot summer. Grandma, of course, goes all out to keep the kids entertained. Here they all are playing some sort of memory game.
John reads to Simon. This moment was every bit as cute as it appears.
Three out of four smiles here isn't bad. Simon has a hard time taking his eyes off of his brother and sister at times!
For snack the first day we met Millie's grandmother downtown for ice cream. No decent picture was captured of the whole crowd, but John's joy here will suffice to speak for the moment.
Kira--less messy but also far more focused on the task at hand.
Millie took this picture of herself & Simon while the rest of us were inside getting ice cream. It's a bit odd, to be sure, but notice how their eyes and hair are the exact same colors.
And just so you can see how peaceful we are when Grandma takes care of us for the week. This is us after the kids were all down for sleep that first night. Thanks, Mom!
Coming soon: A canoe trip & a visit to the waterfall!

Idyllic

A four-year-old, a two-year-old, a sunny day, a baby pool, homemade popsicles, a happy dog, fig trees, and chickens in their run.  This picture pretty much captures my idea of a perfect morning!

Preschool's Out for the Summer

Today was Kira's last day of preschool for the year.  They played outdoor games all day, and she had so much fun.  By the time we got home, she collapsed in a heap and proclaimed, "I'm sad because I had such a big day!"  How very self aware of her.
We thought it was John's last day of Parents' Morning Out when we took this picture this morning, but it turns out he has one more week.  Jay also has one more week of teaching, and then the Wamsteds will shift into summer mode.  I couldn't be more excited!

If you want to see what a difference a school year makes, check out this post from the first day of Parents' Morning Out.  My, how those 2 have grown!  (Not to mention their baby brother who was still in utero at the time.)

Laughter

Life with 3 young kids can be flat-out exhausting, but there are moments that remind you it's all worth it.  Watching these 3 laugh together on Sunday afternoon was one of those moments.  I think Kira was actually fake laughing in this picture to make the other 2 laugh.  It looks like it worked!

Dr. Wamsted

In the past 5 years, Jay has...
   - had 3 beautiful children
   - been published 4 times
   - ridden 16,025.2 miles on his bicycle (I kid you not.  I got this data off of his bike spreadsheet.  Yes, really.)
   - taught over 800 high school students
   - completed a 358 page dissertation
   - and (drumroll, please) earned 1 PhD from Georgia State University.

Jay will be embarrassed by this post, but the numbers speak for themselves.  How could I not brag on this man?!  It's been a wild 5 years; I can't wait to see what the next 5 will bring!

Here is a link to Jay's dissertation for the few of you who have expressed interest.

Curls

Simon has decided to buck the trend of straight hair around here with his wavy curls.
