Around Here

Here are a few random shots for you.  Below is Kira picking blueberries inside the cages that Jay built to keep the birds away.  We had NO IDEA how many delicious blueberries the birds have been eating in years past.  This year, WE are eating our tasty blueberries!
Yesterday, John received his special quilt from YaYa for his big boy bed.  He loves looking at all the patterns.  This is a picture of him testing it out in his bed.  When I put him to bed last night, he was still inspecting it this closely and marveling at all the colors.  What a beautiful gift!
Simon is sitting up very well.  He is now stable enough to reach and grab ANYTHING he can get his hands on.  And, of course, said thing goes directly to his mouth.

Some New Things

John's new bed!
(the "problem" with John's new bed)
Simon's new trick--sits up until knocked down by a passing sibling! (thus the boppy...)

Kids + Music = Awesome

This is our first stab at a video post. As with most videos of little kids, I would caveat that it is not necessarily the most fascinating thing in the world--but it is pretty cute if you happen to like these three kids. I put one of Kira & John's favorite songs on the ipod and they ran to grab their instruments so they could sing to Simon. You're going to watch an edited version of that concert.

(If you watch carefully you'll notice that John's glockenspiel is turned upside down in the second part. This is due to a deleted scene wherein he gets his hammer caught in Kira's dress and loses his grip. In an effort to retrieve it, he flips the keys over with his knees. And yet, he keeps on playing. That's showmanship.)

Superman Curl

We have no idea where this curly-headed baby came from, but given the summer movie schedule, Jay is starting to suspect Krypton. Look: he's even trying to fly in this picture. Hmmm...

Summer 'Do

John has been shorn for the summer.  Now he doesn't have hair in his eyes all the time, and he's pretty cute, too!

Half-Birthday

Simon turned 6-months-old on the 29th.  His check-up was yesterday.  He's a healthy little boy!  He weighs 18 lbs, 9.2 ounces and is 27.75 inches long (that's the 75th and 90th percentiles, respectively).  Simon's half-birthday also marks the advent of "real" food.  He started with rice cereal a few days ago, and peas will soon follow.  Get excited, Simon!  There's a whole world of deliciousness out there!
Speaking of deliciousness, look what Kira is growing!  Below is the first carrot we harvested.  A little small perhaps, but very yummy.  Have you ever wriggled a carrot gently out of the soil?  It's magical to find that familiar orange shape attached to the fluffy green top you've been tending.  We're enchanted. Carrots may have to become a garden staple around here.

Memorial Day in the Mountains, Part Three: Dry Falls

After the big canoe adventure in the morning, we took the family to Dry Falls in the afternoon.  As you can see, the falls are not, in fact, dry.  We hiked down close to the falls.  Both the big kids walked the whole way down, but Simon rode in style.  Look!  A family picture, and no one is mad or crying!
What's awesome about this waterfall is that the path actually leads behind it.  You are tucked up under the rocks and can watch the water in front of you.  Kira loved it, and her enthusiasm emboldened her little brother.
John hitched a ride back up the path on Daddy's back.  Kira trekked the entire way, and slept well that night!

Memorial Day in the Mountains, Part Two: Canoeing

The kids were super excited about taking a canoe ride with Grandma & Papa Al. Here we are about to get in the boat and take off. Notice the hand holding. How cute are those kids?
View from the back of the boat--the stern, if you will. Those are ducks off in the distance.
John stayed in Grandma's lap the whole time. She didn't seem to mind, even though he is rather wiggly at times. Charming, sure--but still pretty wiggly.
Kira started out in the belly of the boat, but ended up on my lap pretty quickly. She also managed to snag my paddle in the process.
Here she is showing off her paddling skills. Notice that she brings the same focus to her canoeing that she did to her ice cream eating.
John paddled too, although I'm not sure how much water got moved by this team. He thought it was pretty cool either way.
At one point Grandma got out with the two kids and Albert and I paddled around for a while. He strikes rather a noble pose here, don't you think? The great explorer?
Here we are, going under a bridge (that's why Grandma is ducking down with the kids). For some reason I really liked this picture. Maybe it feels like we're on some grand adventure? Or maybe because usually it's pretty difficult to get Kira & John to look at the camera at the same time...
Still to come: the waterfall!
