A Love Note

Kira handed me this card after preschool today.
She sounded out and wrote the words herself: "I love Millie."  (Why she wrote "Millie" instead of "Mommy," I'll never know.)  She stole my heart a little bit with her love note - as if she didn't have it already!
*Edit: Apparently "Millie" was easier to sound out that "Mommy."

The Incredible Edible Egg

After 5 months of tending to chickens, we have finally gotten our first eggs!  Even though I knew our chickens would begin laying soon, I was totally amazed when Jay brought these eggs in from the coop last night.  It's funny how something so ordinary can feel like such a miracle.

Simon the Explorer

Simon started crawling 2 weeks ago today.  He has spent the past 2 weeks honing his exploration skills.  If there is any contraband item on the ground, he will be there chewing it (or possibly ingesting it--don't worry, so far it's only been paper products).  Below see him deciding how to take on the 1 foot drop to our porch...
...and peering into a drawer of Little People.
Here he is halfway through climbing our steps (thankfully, there are only 2 of them!).  He does this constantly.
Last, but not least, is Simon's favorite of all - pulling up on the dishwasher.  I can no longer unload dishes while Simon is awake.
Long story short, this baby is keeping us busy!

John Starts Preschool

I am so proud of John.
He started preschool today.  He'll go 2 days a week this year - Thursdays and Fridays.
He ran to give his teacher her present when we got there (the cup he's holding).  He happily told me goodbye with no fussing or crying.
And I got a great report when I picked him up.  His teacher said he listens and talks very well.  She said that it didn't seem like his first day at all but rather like he's been doing this forever.  Did I mention that I'm proud of him?  Because I am.  What a great kid!

Crawling and Teeth

Apparently, Simon will not be outdone by his siblings.  They may be starting preschool this week, but Simon is having a big week as well!

On Sunday, he officially started crawling.  He is still slow (and fussy) when he's up on his hands and knees.  He will crawl properly for a few feet, and then he sometimes drops to his belly and slides himself across the floor to grab whatever illicit item he can find.

Simon's first tooth also broke through today.  I've been checking his mouth daily for months and expecting those teeth to come in any time.  The first one finally poked through, and I have a good feeling the second one won't be far behind.

Kira started Pre-K this morning.  On the way home, I asked her what her favorite part was.  She replied, "EVERYTHING! ... wait, no, playing on the playground!"  Her enthusiasm and her inability to choose cracked me up.  Suffice it to say, she had a wonderful day, and I think it will be a great year.

We did a little photo shoot before we got in the car this morning.  Kira was incredibly cooperative and excited to pose.
John was less cooperative and excited about pictures...
And Simon pretty much sat in a stroller and fussed the entire time.

Put that Girl to Work

This afternoon after rest time, Kira announced that she really wanted to get some yard work done.  She got out her wheelbarrow, shovel, rake, and hoe and set to it.
She took a quick break to smile for Mommy, and then it was right back to work.
All this while Jay and I did our own thing on the porch.  Note that we were not, in fact, working in the yard.  Hey, at least someone around here is attempting to rein in the chaos of weeds.

John & Simon

We ran a post like this earlier in the summer--a series of shots of John & Simon being goofy together. At risk of repetition, we're going to post another batch. We were trying to get a decent shot of Simon by himself, sitting up and looking cute, but John jumped into the action. Typical third child: can't get a picture by himself. They kind of look alike here, we think, at least in the non-hair department.

John at Yaya and PopPop's

On Tuesday night, John got to go spend the night at Yaya and PopPop's house all by himself.  I wasn't sure how he would do without his big sister.  I got an email that evening entitled, "John LOVES Brown Cows! Wish I had gotten a video!"  The following 13 (yes, 13) pictures were attached.  It looks to me like John did just fine on his own...
