Kira's Art Party

Kira is the envy of many Atlanta children in that she is Miss Holly's granddaughter.  One of the privileges of having an Art Chick for a grandmother is that you get your very own art birthday party.  Miss Holly and Miss Lannie (aka Yaya and Lala) put on an amazing party for Kira and her friends.  We made ladybugs per the birthday girl's request.
The only snafu came in the form of a stomach bug.  Kira displayed no symptoms until she tried to eat her long-awaited cookie cake.  I knew something was up when she couldn't finish her piece.  She spiraled down pretty quickly after that, and the throw up started as soon as we got home.  Poor kid.

One small consequence of Kira's illness was that I didn't get several of the pictures I wanted to.  For instance, I don't have one of the birthday girl with Yaya and Lala or Mommy and Daddy.  Luckily, I took the ones above before she felt awful.  And one below to document the sadness.
A big, big thank you to The Art Chicks for a wonderful party.  A big, big apology to anyone who caught our stomach bug.

5-Years-Old

Five years ago today, this little girl made me a Mommy and Jay a Daddy.  For that we are so grateful.  Happy birthday, Kira Jane!  We love you!

Simon at 15 Months

How cute is that kid?  Check out that dimple!
I took Simon for his 15-month check-up last week.  He weighed in at a whopping 27 pounds, 3 ounces and he's 32.75 inches long.  He's very big and very healthy.  He's also been working on some molars lately (3 down, 1 to go) as well as some other teeth.  We'll all be glad when that's over...

Per request, here are the lyrics to John's song:

"One Foot, Step Foot"
by John Wamsted

One foot, step foot
What do you do?
I am a butterfly.
What is your name?
My name is John.

(now it goes)

Apadapadoo
Apadapadoo
The butterfly flying!

(now it goes)

Pph-ba-bup-ba-boo
Up-ba-bup-ba-boo
Ba-da
The butterfly flying!

John has managed to sing this song with surprising consistency.  For the most part, his performance in the video is not improvised.  This is a song that he has now taught the rest of us, to the point that Jay messes up the lyrics, and John corrects him.  Funny kid.

Three Videos

This is Jay.

A lot of new things are going on around the Wamsted house. To commemorate, we've captured a series of videos that (kind of) tell the story. First: Simon is officially walking, everywhere! As you can tell from the video, the other kids love it.
video
Next: John is officially out of pull-ups, in underwear, and using the potty like a big kid! We decided NOT to take a video of this rather private (albeit very exciting) moment in our family's life. Instead, we offer a song that John made up one day, called "One Foot Step Foot." (Listen carefully for the movement changes, signaled by John saying, "Now it goes...").

Last: Kira has started to do 2 activities, both of which are exciting to me personally.  Reading and asking me to show her how to play songs on the piano. Millie and I have been trying to decide where the line is between not reading and reading.  We think she's crossed it.  And I am trying to be cool about the piano, but it is hard not to get excited when she runs over and says, "Excuse me, Daddy, but I need to practice my songs." Here she is playing a one-finger version of "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing" (a staple around here, for some reason).
